I met this Filipina through a Christian website, kinda like a dating site, but it can be used for fellowship, & friendship as well as dating. Anyway. We've been mailing each other back & forth & she notice that I used a word in Tagalog & offered to teach me her language. We are both Christians & our friendship is just starting, since we met a few weeks ago. She lives in Manila & I live in Hawaii. Do you think something will develop more than friendship?

Have you consulted your crystal ball? Now, who better than you is qualified to answer this question? After all, you are the only one communicating with her. At this stage, it's too early in the game, to predict if something other than friendship will materialize. Oh, what was the word anyway. Is that word, salamat? I gather by met, you don't mean physically, right. How are you planning to see each other?
Have you exchange photos? Guess you're not e-mailing nor IM each other. That's the cheaper way and the faster way. Learning the language helps although most Filipina know how to communicate in English. Salamat is thank you. Mahal Kita is I love you. Paalam is goodbye or Aloha.

It's a bit too early to tell, isn't it? Why don't you just enjoy the friendship for now and take it for as it is and see what happens. If it does, great and you'll deal with that when the time comes. If not, then you got yourself a new great friend. Don't rush it, especially since you're both living so far from each other. It's difficult enough to start/sustain/develop a relationship in the same city, much less long distance. Live the present, and enjoy it.

You are in a situation much like mine Aron W, I to have started conversing with a girl from the Philippines. we have chatted for a while now and all is going well . I am planning to go there sometime in 2008. I am not sure what I must do to get approval from her family. I do not know if they would object to the idea of having an American as part of their family, I slowly am beginning to care more for her and if she and her family will have me in 2008 we will be married there. Of course I am presupposing our relationship will eventually head that way. The girl that I have been writing to also has offered to teach me Tagalog, and though I have had trouble with it, I will learn enough to say Hello and show respect to her and her family. Another thing you wrote is similar to my situation is that the Filipina I am chatting with lives near Manila. She has lately been signing off with the words "Mahal Kita" which I will later learn the meaning of. Best of all things to you and your friend.

major complaints of the Philippino people. But the people I dealt
with are mostly "untrustworthy" type. This does not mean that
all Philippino are unreliable. Of course, there are some good ones around. I'm sure you know that...

anything is possible but you have to be very careful. i hate the stereotyping about filipinas as dollar grabbers or just want to get out of the country. i admit that it really happnes thats why foreigners need to be cautious. because if you just believe everything bad that you hear, you can also be missing the good one, right? i myself is not filipina technically but i'm born in the philippines. i love being filipina. i love everything about the philippines. in every country, there are the good and the bad. it's just so happen that it's a poor country so people think of filipinas as opportunistic, ambitious and ya know. meeting someone from the internet is like gambling. hey this goes for all and not just filipinas. anyone can fool you. there's nothing wrong to know her better. not because that both of you are christians (some can be hypocrites too), you'll learn in the process if she's just after your green card. right now, it's too early to know. follow your instinct. in this situation, use your mind not your heart. you have to meet her before having plans or whatsoever. good luck! i hope she's worth it.

Time will tell. Just carry on with the friendship and get to know each other better. Don't get carried away with your emotions. Always use your head and listen to your gut feelings. If you sense something's amiss or out of the ordinary, take note of it. You can always sense a person's sincerity if they're consistent with what they say. And if things develop more than friendship, then you arrange to meet each other in person to know if there's more worth pursuing with each other.

Filipinos,filipinas value friendships like we can't imagine.you can hope but be prepared for friends only.also a lot of Filipinos are "strictly" religious when it comes to pre marriage "courting"
