There are lots of different types of AVI files these days. DivX and Xvid are two relatively recent varieties that may not play without downloading the new codecs. A Codec means "coder/decoder" that tells the program how to interpret the binary file. There's a little program that you can get that can tell you the codec required for a video clip here: http://avicodec.duby.info/

That site also has links to various collections of Codecs and installation utilities. It still may not work for various reasons, expecially if the file is corrupted. There is also a malware/spyware issue with some porn websites telling you to install a new codec from their website which is really spyware.

If you need more general information you can look up codecs in Wikipedia or videohelp

You might not have the codec, or the movie is not right, maybe you didnt downloaded the complete file, but try downloading a player that reproduces avi files, if it does do that, then you dont have the codec in you r media player. Try "avi player" on google, and download.

You need to download the new Codecs to play *.AVI files. You can try the link http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/format/codecdownload.aspx and download them.
