Not knowing that you have eternal life! The fear of death. Death holds people captive, that's why we say the truth will set you free. If you believe in Jesus and eternal life you are free from the fear of death! In fact the bible tells us that to die is gain. To be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD!

"to die, to sleep, perchance to dream; aye there's the rub for in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil..." That's a part of Hamlet's thoughts on death...mainly it's a fear of the unknown. When people travel to Venice they can come back and describe it to you and comment on the culture and the inhabitants...nobody comes back from death to reassure you. You're kind of alone; it's the old one in a box story we die alone...the experience is a solo event and that's also a scary thought. In the Bushido the Samurai warrior woke up every morning and imagined every way he could die that day and got it over with.

First of all you have to understand is what we don't understand, so automatically, we're afraid. It's human nature. We don't know what's going to happen to us when we die. That's why most people are afraid. That's my first theory.
My second theory is that most people think that it's really gonna hurt to die... go to rotten.com (if you're not faint hearted) and look at the pictures there. People look at how some unfortunate others have died and associate, and (understandably so) and think "Ouch...wow, that looks scary, I don't think I wanna die, if I'm gonna go out like that."
