Maya and 3DS Max are produced by the same company now. You can look them both up on discreet.com. 3DS Max is ~$3500 new and Maya is either $1900 or $7000, depending on whether or not you buy it with all the filters and stuff (which Maya is practically worthless without, btw.)

I'm not sure what your goals are for this software, but you might consider looking at Blender 3D. It's maybe a little difficult to understand at first, but once you've been through a few tutorials, you'll find it's a very powerful program. Google recently was paying people to develop it, and recently Blender Orange was used to create a short animation (which was well animated, but had a poor storyline.)

As far as computers, think memory, video card memory, processor speed. The more you have of those three things, the better the animation program will run. Also, if you're going to be doing a lot of this, you might consider having a set of RAID drives to put all of your files on, in case one drive crashes.

Blender; $0 or $10/month

As a hobbyist, freelancer, or small to medium sized studio you can use Blender as a low-cost alternative to Maya ($125/month), ZBrush ($800), and After Effects ($20/month).

It's my experience that modeling and rendering is easier in max, while texturing rigging and animating and scripting is easier in maya. honestly. go with blender to get your feet wet and see what you want to focus on because really, there's SO MUCH depth to any of the specializations within 3d that you can't realistically be a generalist and have the same amout of skill/knowledge as a specialist on a singular subject.

Maya is more movies industry oriented, Max is more gaming industry oriented.
