They wear a hijab (scarf) on there head because it is required in the Islamic world. It is to keep unnecessary eyes of different men off of her. Muslim women are not allowed to do anything that attracts the attention of men and makes em eager to do anything irrational.

they cannot wear makeup, excessive jewelry, revealing clothes, or be flirty with other men

Wearing a headscarf is an act of modesty in Islam for women. It protects them from the evil lust-full unwanted stares from other men. It also gives them a sense of security, and less chance of being raped.

It is also a sign of loyalty towards their husbands. They cover up as to say "my body is for the eyes of my husband only." Some countries enforce the act by law, such as Saudi Arabia, and they ask for non-Muslim women to dress up decently.

Other Asian and far East Asian Muslim countries aren't that conservative and over there its a personal choice. Some women chose to cover up, others don't. But usually, most married Muslim women will be definitely wearing at least a headscarf if not being fully covered.

Hope this helped.

whatever the answers that you have received are quite true
these people know what they were talking about
but there is one thing more to it and that is
it is for the protection of the women
being attracted to a woman is in man's nature
God knows that
and toprotect his people to commit any folly, God has asked the Muslim women
not to wear perfume outside their homes
not to raise their voices so that can be heard by other men
not to show a single strand of hair
if you notice one thing
whenever a woman opens her hair she looks beautiful
how many movies have you seen where a guy almost falls in love withthe woman's beautiful hair
u see hair frames theface and neck andthat makes you look attractive and that is EXACTLY what arouses men
so just to be on a safer side women use this scarf which is referred to as a "Hijab"
in the timeof Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h)
the non-believers used to harrass women in crowds are public places
some of them were muslims and so the issue was brought into notice
when asked, the non believers replied that they could not distinguish between the Muslim and the non-muslim ones
and so from there on these women wore Hijabs to distinguish themselves as Muslims

and asking about it... why wud anyone be offended
its a good thing you asked
now you have the history and a rational reason for us to cover our selves...

but in the world of today not every one follows a strict cover
many believe that they can cover themselves with a shawl or anyother cloth
its ok
as long as they are covered..
hope it answers ...

I'm not a woman, but I can tell you why they do it. It is a religious thing, and women do it for the reason of looking respectful. It's been told that a woman's hair can be very seductive to a man. And if you look closely, head wraps are not solely restricted to Muslim women. Look at how the Virgin Mary is portrayed in Christianity. Same applies to the way nuns dress.

The head cover worn by all adult Muslim women (whether married or not) is part of their religion.

The significance is to observe modesty and avoid unecessary and lustful attention from men. It is also in accordance with the scriptures and traditions of the Prophet.

It is widely practiced in the Muslim world - from Arabia to the Far East, from Africa to part of Spain and is a matter of proactive choice for the women concerned.

Hope that helps.

Muslim women cover their heads and their bodies to protect their womanhood from lustful eyes.

In Quranic law, Muslim women must cover themselves to avoid unintentionally causing men to sin by looking at their bodies or any part of their bodies (even if it's just an arm or leg). It's for their protection.

Some countries like Saudi Arabia enforce the law requiring women to wear an abaya (full body covering). Some other moderate countries allow women to use only the hijab (headscarf) provided they cover themselves with conservative or modest clothing. Some liberal countries like Turkey are totally liberal and don't require their women to cover themselves.

Since there are some great answers, I'm not really going to add, but simply recommend the book "Conformity and Conflict" to you. I had to read it for an intro-anthropology class and it has many mini ethnologies, including a handful on Muslims. Just thought you might be interested.

Tell you the truth as I am a Muslim. It is a mind trick for personal renewal. People need to do this though not needed; it only benefits the thinking brain, to calm it, to be closer to god.

It is not required by god but only a society driven dilemma where people including Muslims think to be required.

A lot of Muslims are confused about this matter as they only can tell you from what other people told them. Interpretation.

God really does not care if you wear it or not, but rather did you believe in him while you were on planet earth. This is the question god is going to ask in Islamic believe. He don’t give a damn on material stuff.

Muslims will say they do this to protect their women from over heated men. The Custom comes from a Hadith(custom of Mohammed) it" was said" that he hid his women behind a shroud so thus the Muslims began replicating this. Although historical evidence seems to point out that Mohammed was a lot more liberal and equal to women than most muslims support!

the wrap on the head is call a tudong. the muslims believe that a muslim woman should not let anyone see their whole face, meaning to cover part of their forehead and their hair, as it is only meant for their husbands to see. its like a modesty thing.
