I am generally the helpful type. I am always seeking ways to help others...it is what brought me to Answers in the first place. The very first question I saw was about a woman stuck in a loveless marriage...and it touched my heart. I never dreamed I would find so much in return, make new friends, and get to express myself.
It goes to show you...if you give from a pure heart, you receive so much more than you bargained for...for it was never my original intent.
I took me many years to learn how to receive gracefully. I was used to doing for myself, and often felt a sense of obligation when someone would do something nice for me. This was self-imposed, as I know in my heart, they expected nothing in return. There is something poetic in simply saying, "Thank you"...a learned skill, that often eluded me in the past.

I like to help others when I can. That is the situation I find myself in most.

To be helped so I have a path to follow therefore, I can help others. I find myself helping others more though, but it's okay, at least I get some respect in return. I believe helping others will get you farther in life. First off, you'll have connections, yes? If you wanted to be helped, you'll be requesting help all the time and you won't learn from advices. You learn from trial and error.
Hey, one question, Cora. Have you ever taken psychology classes in high school or college? It just amazes me how many questions you post up on Yahoo! Answers that are in the psychology division. Keep it up, glad to keep answering to prepare my naivete mind for my AP Psychology class in high school. Argh.

I actually find myself in both positions, more often than I like. And I can honestly say that being in the "recievers" position is more difficult... I think that most people have problems accepting help because it means admitting that you have either failed or don't know what to do.
I've been lucky in that I have friends and family that can help me, but I feel guilty when I take advantage of it... I much prefer to be in the position of being able to "help others".

Being a senior citizen who is disabled I often need help and find it very frustrating. Not often, can help anyone else except by being a good listener.

I'd rather help someone than be helped. I'm far too independant to easily accept help from others...I'd rather do it on my own. Helping others is like second nature to me. It just happens...I don't even have to think about it.
