...add "not that there's anything wrong with it"

Could someone help me understand this please? Doesn't having to defend it every single time speak of its guilt?

Americans feel the need to be "politically correct", whatever that happens to be at any given moment. They feel that need due to a lack of self confidence and a need to please others. Not all of us feel that need. You would NEVER hear me say "not that there's anything wrong with it" when referring to homosexuality. I find it quite disgusting and don't mind saying so. If that hare-lips the devil, then the devil's gonna have to wear a hare-lip.

Haha. Seinfeld made a joke of the phrase for exactly that reason.

Too many Americans believe they can say anything as long as they add some silly passive-aggressive phrase like that to excuse themselves for saying offensive stuff. Or, it's the insecurity thing, ya know, "It's okay, but it's NOT ME." Both of which may explain why we also have sooo many shrinks! Oh well, take the good with the bad. It's my country and there lots of other stuff here to love.

And, to you, Mr. Bigot from the sounds of it, the phrase is not actually used much in reference to homosexuality here. Exactly where is it that you're Yahooing from?

Personally, I don't care whether or not other people think it's right or wrong. If I wanted their opinion, I'd read their blog!!! No, no, people just want to make sure they don't come off as a bigot, so they add that comment. Being gay is the most beautiful thing in the world, and one shouldn't feel guilty about being beautiful.People sometimes think that there is something about being gay that should be meet with guilt, and they are wrong.

Odd, as I don't hear that added when homosexuality is discussed. And I'm a Westerner, and an American.

Does being overly concerned about something you don't agree with indicate that someone has deep seated issues with themselves and the issue they don't agree with?

I'm an American and I've never used this phrase or heard it used in any conversation concerning homosexuality. We don't all talk the way they do on tv.

it's a very famous line from Seinfeld. It's part of the zeitgeist. I think they're using it in jest. Hell I'm just happy they're saying it..... compared with America's Taliban that wants to impose their religious rule of law in every nook and corner of America. I'll take "not that there's anything wrong with that" any day!

Only people who think in the back of their minds that there IS something wrong with being gay add that comment.
Personally I find it condescending and self righteous.

if gay people feel the need to defend themselves its only because of the discrimination and ingnorance of society; like you for example.
