Be nice to her. Tell her you understand her problems. Ask her for advice. We girls love to give advice even when others don't want it! Listen to her when she talks. If that's impossible, just nod your head so she thinks you're listening. Tell her she's pretty even without makeup. Just don't do all these things at the same time, you don't want to creep her out.

Try being nice to her... genuinely. That always works for me.
Also, go down to your local book store and read one of those books on interesting cheap dates. Those ideas have come in handy for more than 10 years for me!
