-- adjunct (contractual)
-- lector/lecturer (contractual)
-- assistant professor (usually tenure-track or "probationary")
-- associate professor (tenured)
-- professor (tenured usually with books published)
-- distinguished professor (there are several variations on the theme i.e. Sterling Professor of the Humanities)
-- professor emeretis (title conferred to some upon retirement)

jamie b has answered the question, but books and articles must be published to receive tenure. publication and paper presentations are expected for all positions. there are also visiting positions with little rank.
