The highest paid engineers in the last nationwide survey were Petroleum Engineers, with an average salary of $92,840 per year. Other engineers had salaries close to the range (see citation below).

The most common type of engineer is Civil Engineer, there are over 226,000 in the US. Mechanical Engineers are close behind with over 219,000 nationwide.

Recent projections suggest that the biggest growth in jobs over the next ten years will be for Environmental Engineers.

There is more difference within each discipline than there is between them. Your salary depends not just on which branch you go into but upon how good an engineer you are. If you are considering which path to take, take the one you enjoy the most.

It depends on where you want to live. In a rural area, for example, you'd want something like civil or mechanical. If you can live anywhere, then a lot of the computer fields are hot right now.

It is really difficult to quantify but my gut feel tells me that it's MECHANICAL because it is very versatile. At any rate, in terms of shortage, I would guess SOFTWARE - you may get a higher pay because there are more job vacancies than applicants.
