a dvd-r can only be used once..so they are good if you are copying a whole dvd or cd..drd-rw's are re writeable disks meaning you can add more to them later or erase them and start over..generally the rw disks are a bit more expensive but if there is an error in the burning phase then you wont have to ditch them or turn them into frisbee's like the dvd-r's.

/R = read only. You can "read it," but cannot write to it.
/RW = read/write

I used the CD/RWs for backups. If you "format" the CD/RW, you can copy files to it and reopen or copy them. The CD/RW acts like a floppy.

However, each burning program, Nero, DLA, that allows you to read/write, needs their own "reading program" on the other PC in order to "read" it.

What I mean is, if you used them for backups of your Word files, you could open and work on them, but if you took the CD/RW to someone else's PC, they could not read it unless they had the specially-written read program provided by Nero or DLA.

As for the best, a lemon can come in any batch, but SONY is usually good.
