You can start feeding your baby jarred food around 4 months. They have 3 different stages, and as you move up the consistency gets thicker and kinda chunky. When your baby starts picking up things with a pincher grasp (the index and forefinger) he/she is ready for foods like we eat but in small pieces. Start out with soft foods that easily dissolve, like well done veggies and crackers. Gradually introduce other foods like noodles, cheerios, and fruits.

Same as for a girl! They now recommend holding off until at least 4 months, and preferably 6 months. The earlier you feed solids the higher the risk for obesity and food allergies. Nutritionally, breastmilk or formula is ALL they need until 6 months of age, and a lot of babies aren't physically ready to eat until then, anyways.
Your baby is starting to get ready for solids when:
he is about four months old
he becomes more sociable, playing and holding "conversations" with you during a nursing session
he has a growth spurt and nurses more frequently for a while
he imitates the chewing motions you make whilst eating -- he is practicing!
You will know that he is really ready to start solids when:
he is about six months old
he can sit up without any support
he continues to be hungry despite more frequent nursing which is unrelated to illness or teething
he has lost the tongue-thrusting reflex and does not push solids out of his mouth
he can pick up things with his finger and thumb (pincer grasp)

Babies of either sex can start eating pureed foods around 6 months. Some may be ready to move on to table foods fairly quickly and others may take longer. All three of my kids started babyfood at 6 mos and were on table foods by 9 months.
