Yesterday morning a scab on my guinea pig's foot tore and it started bleeding terribly. I was so scared and since it was Sunday the vet was closed. I used cornstarch and applied pressure. Fortunately it clotted and today he's doing a lot better. I took the wire floor out of his cage which probably caused his scab to begin with so now he has a soft surface to walk on. He's overall healthy but there is still a sore on his foot. Is there anything else I can do to help heal his sore faster? I'm afraid of applying a bandage because he could bite it off ripping his scab and if I put ointment on it he could lick it off and ingest it.

It's not too serious anymore- otherwise I'd immediately see the vet.

Neosporin and Bacitracin in small amounts will not hurt the guinea pig. It is very important to get rid of the cage bottom that you are using or future problems will occur with the toes as well. Guinea pigs should be kept in a flat bottomed cage. Superpetusa.com has several kinds on their website for examples that you should be able to find in a pet store. Be sure to keep the bedding really clean until the foot is completely healed especially make sure no maggots are in the bedding. Please remember to cut the guinea pig's nails on a regular basis also or it won't be able to walk properly. There are lots of excellent beddings available. For now you could keep a towel rag in the cage for it to rest on and launder it regularly. Do not use cedar bedding though.

I have 2 piggy's and they are soo funny, they love each other... I keep that soft new paper like bedding on the bottom and then cover it with timothy hay so they don't get hurt....and they like to hide under it...I would just put neosporin on it, that is what my vet said to use on the dogs... just a little at a time so he won't lick too much off... good luck...

It sounds like you did good taking care of him. Just keep an eye on the sore, make sure he isn't chewing at it, and check for infection, pus, etc. Otherwise, he should be fine. No, I wouldn't apply bandage, he'll just chew it off. Guinea pigs chew everything, as you well know by now.
