I am an Australian and in this country we also do not have legal recognition of same-sex marriage, however there is a large population of people who are in heterosexual partnerships but who choose not to get married and face very similar challenges as same -sex couples in regards to access to the legal implications of marriage. Meaning, that marriage under the law, as recognized as a legal institution, bares with it certain legal privileges. By this I mean, property rights, access to a partner's will, or estate, the right to be involved if a partner is hospitalized, and child custody arrangements. Therefore, marriage is a legal institution that has been embedded with certain privileges, and protections by the system and the state. All people regardless of gender or relationship status should be able to have the same right to access protections and privileges. It is not so much a matter of legalizing or sanctifying same-sex marriage, rather making sure that all people have access to the same basic rights and legal rights.

Love happens. If people want to get married, they should be allowed to. The biggest argument people have is that it is against the bible. If there is a true separation of church and state, it wouldn't be an issue. Not everyone is a christian and many Christians have realized that it is not a sin. It is not a choice. It wouldn't degrade hetero marriage at all. How strong is your marriage if some one else getting married would ruin it? And it would only strengthen the economy, a bunch of people suddenly spending money to have a big wedding that couldn't before. That would make money! Some couples would have the benefit of shared insurance through work and things like that, and people think that would drive businesses in bankruptcy. But think about it, gays are about 10 percent of the population. Some are kids, some are happy living with their partners and some are in hiding. So what percent would actually get married? Lets say about half, so 5 percent of the populace would suddenly marry. How many of them have jobs that cover families? How many already have coverage? There are countries that allow gay marriage, and they haven't falling in to hell yet! They are doing fine.
If you think about all this, it doesn't make sense why we don't allow gays to marry.

A marriage license is a legal contract between two consenting adults. It's discrimination to deny the same provides granted by that license to gays based on arcane prejudices and religious beliefs. Per the Constitution -- which still is the law of the land -- church and state are distinctly separate in the US. We pay taxes, serve our country, and are respectful, law abiding citizens. We live in a country that allows pedophiles, wife beaters, and criminals to marry, yet says that allowing us to marry is more disturbing. It makes as much sense as only prejudice and bigotry can. In other words, none.

FYI, you will not find a gay or gay supporter needing to be told to keep it clean. Only the minds of narrow bigots reaching for the revolting to castigate others need that disclaimer -- which says nothing about us but does say much about the twisted nature of those adamantly opposed.

You can label it anything you like, but the legal benefits of marriage number over 1100 which is why it's so necessary and important for us: taxes, insurance, custody of children, inheritances, social security, medical care, joint ownership, on and on. It is a shame that the religious zealots jumped on this bandwagon to argue against - instead of the war. They miust think that that the killing of innocent people is ok, but the union of 2 loving people obviously isn't. Even if we could only lay claim to "civil unions", at least we could have the benefits and the relationships would be recognized.

Being a straight female, I honestly do not see what people have against gay marriage. If you aren't gay, how is the matter even relevant to you?Marriage is a secular issue, and it's main purpose was for the transfer of property. It even says so in the Bible, in Leviticus, under a brides dowry. It has only been in the last few centuries that a woman was not considered 'property' and the whole romanticized notion of a 'happy marriage' came into vogue.Obviously, times have changed from 2000 years ago, and the biblical standard no longer is applicable. That being the case, if 2 people want to marry, regardless of orientation, who the heck are we,the people, to criticize?

Let it happen.. If two people love each other enough to want to marry and spend the rest of their lives with each other, then what is the problem? it doesn't hurt u or me or any one else if those same two people happen to be 2 men or 2 women. what does it matter anyway. come on now. my opinion is,,,, world piece is more important, what is being done about that.. everyone had rather focus and stuff that is not so important. there are so many child molesters, and murderers , and robbings and nonsense out there and people tend to focuse on petty sh*t, that shouln't matter to begin with just because it is differant then what they believe or what they were taught. im not even lesbien or gay but i believe that every one deservies a fair chance.

Of course it should be legal. If straight people have issues about gays getting married, then for God's sake don't marry one!!!!!!!! Gay people are awesome and statistics show that they have a better shot at a healthy, long lasting marriage then breeders, anyway. Love is love, period. And we should be allowed in the Army, too. Like Bush could win any war without lesbians. And we should be in the White House, too. This country could use high-lites and swatches.

Definitely for it. People make the arguement that it's unnatural, but it's not. Brain scans have shown that gays actually have different development (like the difference between a straight man and woman). People say it's morally wrong. Okay, are you against short-term Hollywood marriages and constant divorce? Gays are capable of love, that's for sure! People say it'll open the floodgates and there will be those that want to marry their pet. That's just dumb, there's worlds of difference between letting two loving humans marry and letting a human and a dog marry!

I've supported gay marriage for some time now, and am very proud to live in the only state that allows it: MASSACHUSETTS!

I think it should be legal. All people should have the right to marry the person they love.
As for using religion as a reason not to, well then marriage should not be the union recognized by government, the medical field and companies. Marriage is not a religious union only anymore, mine was performed by the mayor of our city, there was no religion involved in it. To me saying they can have a marriage we will just call it something else is prejudice and ridiculous.

Marriage is a bond between two people who love each other. I have never seen a marriage certificate where the words man and woman only are on it. More power to them. If sex wasn't such a taboo thing in the United States then a lot of us wouldn't be answering these questions. Same sex marriages in European counties is no big deal and they have less divorces. The people in the United States should follow their lead.
