All you can do is to keep reminding him of the dangers. It is clear that, no matter what he says, he does not WANT to give up smoking. It is a tough thing to do (I know I gave it up 30 years ago) but if you really are determined it can be done. The best way is to go "cold turkey" and stop totally. It is hard but trying to cut down will never do what you want it to, it is just paying lip service to the idea of breaking the addiction.

I think all you can do is just keep reminding him of the effects that smoking can have on him and his kids. Because I know that if something happens to him it's going to affect the children. Just tell him that. And he's putting himself at risk to leaving them sooner. And then what happens then. Just explain to him that he is not only hurting himself, but his children too.

Since he is 30+, he's old enough to make his own decisions. If he wanted to quit there are several things out there to help. All he needs to do is put out an effort and ask.

Stop worrying. It will give you grey hair and high bloodpressure. Seriously, he is an adult. Let him make his own decisions. He will quit when he is ready and not a minute before.

ask him if he wants to be there to see his kids get older? to see them graduate from high school and college, build families of their own and have kids of their own? ask him if he wants his grand kids to have a grand father? if he does, then he would seek the needed to treatment to kick his smoking habit so he can enjoy life with his kids.
