yes most wood will catch fire so i would recommend using a piece of stone instead you can get them at a lawn and garden shop they are very heat resistant but if you have children then you might want to hold it in place with some strong metal wire.
flat lava rock is good but a little brittle, but it sure looks good.

Apparently most of the answerers have never lived in a house with radiators or they would not be saying that you cannot put anything on a radiator. You will be blocking some of the air circulation but it will not create a fire hazard. Radiators do get hot but not hot enough to burn anything other than your skin.

Do NOT use the radiator for any purpose other than what it is
intended to do....radiate heat.
Do not use it as a table.
Do not use it as a clothes dryer.
If you cause a fire due to the fact that something you put on or near
the radiator caught fire and burned down the apartments, you'll be
charged with criminal negligence and held liable for all the damage.

Sorry your father in-law is correct on this one. Not only the terminals may jar causing sparks on metal surfaces it could cause an explosion if the battery is in a state of discharge. The cells emit a very explosive gas (hydrogen) and if there is an exterior spark anywhere under the hood the battery will explode taking your hood with it! Another reason for clamping the battery firmly in place is the constant movement and slamming against the bottom of the battery box will cause the inside cell plates to shift and short together. This will reduce battery life.

uhhhh....yes. I wouldn't put wood on it. ANYTHING you place on a radiator will heat up to unbelievable temperatures. Don't use a metal shelf either or it will be like a pancake griddle before long.

No, it won't start a fire. You can even dry clothes on it..assuming you're talking about a steam heat radiator..

If you turn the radiator on, yes, you will start a fire. It's fine as long as you don't use it. If you plan on using it don't put anything on it or near it, and don't hang curtains near it either.

NO! once the radiator is on it will generate heat, transferring it to the wood, and hot enough -- the wood will burn and then you will be out of your apartment.
