Quebec was founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain and originally only served as a trading post for fur. It actually took many years for it to be called a settlement. The population only began to increase when seigniorial powers were given to the church in 1641. Many of the first seigneurs were located in close proximity to Quebec City and remnants can still be seen.
