a contractor i worked for hasn't paid me for work i've done. the owner says he's paid the contractor, the contractor says the owner hasn't, yet the contractor doesn't seem to be making an effort to collect. can i put a lien on the properties in question? i live in california Thank you for all the responses. A little more detail might be in order. The "owner" in this is an investment group. This all started when a man named Royce asked me to work for him after seeing my work, at 1st I thought he was apart of the group turns out he was some kind of project manager. This is where things get jumbled. one day the head of this investment group "Andy" calls me directly and says Royce is being let go but the "group" wants me and my partner to stay on, along with one other man, the before mentioned "contractor" mike is his name. The 3 of us decided to team up under this mans license. Since that moment mike ran things into the ground and I get another call from Andy asking if I’d be willing to

From the way I understand it only the contractor himself can put a lien on someones property. Check your local lien laws in your county or state. It's different depending on where you live. I could only imagine that you should be contracting from the owner and not just anyone who says they represent them, this info can be found in your public county records. This may be some work for you, but my only other suggestion would be through the civil court on a individual bases of who you dealt with. Hope this was a little bit of help. Good luck
