what sweety tweety said above is correct. i will elaborate it further... a medium size deep is lit with pure ghee and over the bati of the deep 2-3 inches away a big katora is balanced face down and kept overnight, the black soot is all gathered and is collected is small Debi with a cover. ..your kajal is ready... this is a very ancient method of preparation and even Ayurveda Vaidyas recommend it . it is also used in the eyes of the new born babies,and the same kajal is applied on the forehead /chin/cheeks of the babies to ward off evil eye/to add beauty... also if u go to any jeweller shops and ask for silver thin rod for applying kajal u will get it . good old days children upto the age of 5-8 yrs were made put this kajal.... made from pure ghee is best for eyes. some one can elaborate this little more
