According the United States Statistical Abstract, table 264, there are about 26 million people in the U.S. attending college.

There are approx. 270 million people in the U.S. Therefore, 26M/270M X 100 = 9.6%

Of course, the term "attending" is very broad. Not every one is attending college for the purpose of a degree. Many take classes to enrich themselves, or to simply take individual classes to enhance their careers.

However, when it comes to actually obtaining a degree, only 50% of the undergraduate population will succeed in this endeavor.

An educated population is the biggest asset this country can have.

Peace.
