Your post reminded me of that highschool kid that took ice from several fast food restaurants, what she found was amazing. Her discovery was the ice had more bacteria than the toilet water in said restaurants. She teasted her samples at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center with a USF Professor. Some of the ice tested positive for fecal coliform or E Coli. Yuk!
I entered Dateline site and was checking back stories and I came across this: they did a survey at several fast food restaurants to determine how clean these places were
:
they tested 100 outlets of McDonald's Restaurants and came up with 136 critical violations.

KFC: 100 KFCs sampled tallied up 157 critical violations and 2/3 had at least one critical violation. Some had law suits pending over salmonella poisoning last year, and at the same restaurant had been cited for 3 more critical violations.

Taco Bell: 100 taco Bells sampled had the fewest total critical violations, 91). But recurring violations included dirty food preparation counters and rodent droppings.

Subway: 100 subways sampled totaled 160 critical violations. A recurring problem was improper food holding temperatures.

Jack In The Box: 164 critical violations. A Ventura Calif. was a trouble spot as it had several complaints of food borne illness.

Dairy Queen: 100 Dairy Queen's examined and totaled 184 critical violations. One Dairy Queen in Hampton, Va. rang up a number of critical violations last summer for grime, debris and an inaccurate thermometer. Problem has since been fixed.

Hardees: a total of 206 critical violatons. Inspectors also cited the presence of insects and rodents. Yuk! insects & rodents breed disease. 1 restaurant was cited also for not having soap in employee's washroom & the employee's were handling food with their hands.

Wendy's: 206 critical violations, same as Hardees, but more Wendy's had the more violations and was listed as # 3 in dirty dining.

Arby's: out of 100 restaurants tested; 210 violations critical. Recurring violations for improper hand-washing and employees handling foods with bare hands.

Burger King: Burger King was listed as # 1 on the dirty dining list. Out of a 100 chains tested they rang up 241 critical violations. A Virgina Burger King had 14 separate critical violations from employees not washing hands, uncovered food in fridge, grime and debris found on ice-chute, spotted an employee scooping ice with his bare hands.

Dateline tested over 1,000 restaurants & sampled totaled 1.755 critical violations, and 613 restaurants were cited at least once. These are industries where millions of food is prepared each day! Imagine!
If your concerned with the swinging doors, think about all the shopping carts at the malls or food stores or elevator buttons in elevators or hand rails on escalators, the list would be endless you'd think!

Of course I do. Any educated doesn't touch the toilet seat or the door handle to a restroom. What kind of a moron washes his hands and then grabs a door handle that has been handled by dozens of guys who don't have the sense to wash their own hands after handling "The General"? You might as well just stand in the restroom and offer to hold EVERY guy's junk while he takes a squirt as handle the door handle they touch.

That's why smart people wlasy wash their hands and turn off the faucet with a paper towel and open the door with a paper towel. Where do you think all those wadded up pieces of paper towel come from that are on the floor right by the door? They are from smart people.

I avoid the door handle, because I am concerned about hygiene,
However I guess, if the door opens inwards, then there is no alternative but to touch the handle and I use a paper napkin in my hands

Ha ha yes. When available I'll use a towel to open the door, or time it so I can go out when someone is coming in. I keep hand sanitizer around for backups.
