Was there ever a case in the 230 years that the United States has been a country where we discarded the results of the primaries because the candidates that were nominated just werent strong enough?

Until 1960 the primaries were just considered as tests of voter appeal. That year Kennedy beat Humphrey in several key primaries and became the party nominee. In 1968 Humphrey received the nomination without participating in a single primary. The Chicago convention fiasco lead to more primaries. Now it is impossible to win the nomination without winning in primaries.

no the primarys are not official USA voting, it's just the parties voting internally. the only real election is the actual vote.
