If your family's from New York and they follow football, then you'll probably be forced to be a Giants fan. :) And that's not all bad with the talent that they have there. It could be a rough year to follow a California team, with the Niners, Chargers, and Raiders as your option. Maybe go up the coast and follow the Seahawks? They probably won't disappoint you either. :)
Whatever you do, just make sure to always follow them good and bad. You don't want to become a fair-weather fan. :)
Enjoy the season! And go Bears!

I agree with some of the people that you need to find teams on TV, figure out which ones you like, and stick with them. If you can, get Direct TV's NFL Package. They will show all of the teams playing on TV. If not, NBC, Fox, ESPN, and The NFL Network will be showing teams on TV as well throughout the year. Saying that, I will now tell you who to root for and against:
Pick the COWBOYS, regardless of that idiot 2 (T.O., believe me, once you start watching football, if you aren't already, you know exactly who that is).
Teams to hate:
1) Pittsburgh Steelers, no matter who they play, hate 'em...
2) Washington Redskins
3) New York Giants
4) Philadelphia Eagles (However, I am rooting for Donovan McNabb. After all, he is recovering from T.O. cancer disease)
So there you have it. Watch TV, make up your mind when you want to, and have fun watching this season...

Pick a team that means something to you, i.e. where you're from, where you live, where you want to live. Don't jump on the band wagon of a team that everyone else likes today, because those fans fade fast. I'm form Pittsburgh, but live in FL now. Been a Steeler fan all my life, Good times and bad (the Kordell years). I was so happy they won the Superbowl, but now every-phonie wears black and gold.
If you are real fanatical, and can hold your own in a fight...there is always the Raider Nation.

Jets could use more fans. Giants are a very old team. Broncos and Steelers really have class-act franchises, so I'd do one of those, but personally I like Denver better. It's totally up to you though.

Forget the Jets, Giants, Broncos or Steelers, go for The Buffalo Bills! They already have the best fans. Our fans stick by them year after year even though they have not had the best of luck.

What is the closest team to your home? That's the team you'll probably get to see on TV the most...That's your best bet. I'm a Carolina Panthers fan still and I live in Wisconsin...so what happens? I root for Green Bay 2nd....Carolina's still my team forever....location location. And hate the Chargers? why? Well how about Arizona? Denver? Seattle? Not much to choose from out there for good teams...But hating the Chargers? Why? LT is amazing...Gates too....:( You will be welcome to be a Panthers fan though :D

whatever you do dont pick a team based on what you read here. everybody is just saying the team they're a fan of. I would just stick with the team where you live even if they suck. Thats the only way you can feel like a true fan unlike all the Steelfraud bandwagon jumpers.
