what do you do when you get screwed by a roommate skipping out on you?

If their name is on the lease with you...then it is a legal issue. I would talk to the landlord and explain the situation. If you need to move because you can't afford it and they skipped out on you...explain it to the landlord. Or you can try to get another roommate. In every city they have legal aid organizations that can help you try to get back the money for the lease agreement.

If they just screwed you over (without a name on the lease)...then you really don't have any recourse whatsoever.

Take them to court if they are on the lease with you.
