freaking ton of money from people who visit the site and see the damn ad. Which is ton of million of dollars

It's just a great marketing strategy, the more people start using Yahoo! Answers, more people start talking about it and more people log on. It's easy for them to get big sponsors ($$$) when all these people from around the world are logging in!

its advertisement, but its also marketing. they can keep tabs on what is cool, what current trends are, what people are interested in, how people talk and respond. It makes sense. All the people who work for Yahoo! are old and all the people that use Yahoo! are young. They gotta keep track of the kids somehow. Plus open forems are nice for asking questions your afraid to ask

They do it for the same reason broadcast channels broadcast for free: It is a way to get the public to see their sponsors advertising.
