I have his weird compulsionto say things I don't mean just so I can see how people will react. I manipulate them into saying something I want to hear. I can't help it. Why?

Maybe your emotions are getting the best of you . If you aren't so quick with your comments , maybe you will be more apt to control your remarks. Try answering silently to yourself before you speak and see if that was what you really mean to say .

You're being polite. People might believe it or hold you to it. Be less polite and more true to yourself.
People can adjust to you some of the time too.
