Nobody cares what age. Anyone can buy a drink.
Roppongi Hills in Tokyo is my favorite. A shopping heaven.
If you stay at Grand Hyatt Tokyo at Roppongi, a variety of shops, restaurants and cinemas are at a walking distance.
A restaurant called Gonpachi, is where President Bush had dined with the Japanese Prime Minister. When you enter the restaurant, you're like going inside a fairy-tale world of fantasies, just like those mood of the Japanese comics.

The legal drinking age is 20.
However, not many bars check ID so many people drink before that age.
Big clubs sometimes do request photo ID. If there is no entry fee then the chance of being asked for ID is very slim.
You can also buy beer etc from vending machines on the street in most areas.

Like everyone said it's 20.
But usually it doesn't matter.
They usually won't let you into clubs and let you drink at bars if you're wearing a highschool uniform but if you wear your regular clothes most likyly they will let you close down the bar if you had the money and stomach.
I used to hang out with my friends at cheap all you can drink pubs when I was 16 -17. Smoked, drank and pulled all nighters.
THen went to school the next day hung over and would sleep all through class.
Man, those were the days....

20 years old for all of Japan. There was a law recently passed banning anyone from buying alcohol who is less than 20 years old. This was passed becasue, in th epast, fathers would send their kids to the corner store to buy a bottle of sake so the dad could keep drinking.
I see less and less of the beer and sake vending machines these days.

It's 20, but no one cares. The clubs are full of high school kids, and obviously vending machines don't check IDs.

What is Tokyo? .. hehehe... don't drink and drive. In that country, they don't care what age you are, just drink and become insane whenever you like.

20.
FYI:
The fine for driving under the influence of alcohol can be easily 300,000 yen/person.
Not only the driver, but also the passengers.
300,000 yen for each.
