v=d/(9 hours)
v+4 mph=d/(8 hours)
Solving the second equation for distance:
8v hours + 32 miles=d
Substituting:
v=(8v hours + 32 miles)/(9 hours)
simplifying:
v=8/9v + 32/9 mph
1/9v=32/9 mph
v=32 mph

Thus her speed to the meeting was 32 mph and from the meeting it was 36 mph.

Let r = speed
d = fixed distance

d = rt, so
d = (r)(9 hr) and
d = (r + 4 mi/hr)(8 hr)

Use the transitive property
r(9 hr) = (r + 4 mi/hr)(8 hr)

Remove the hr unit
r(9) = (r + 4 mi/hr)(8)

distribute
9r = 8r + 32 mi/hr

Transpose and subtract
r = 32 mi/hr

The other speed is
r + 4 mi/hr = 36 mi/hr

Therefore, the speed to the meeting is 32 mi/hr and the return trip speed is 36 mi/hr.

9x = 8(x + 4)
9x = 8x + 32
x = 32

She went 32 mph to the meeting and 36 mph from the meeting.
