This may sound ignorant but I'm just an ignorant old country boy...
I've heard Spanish speaking people referred to as: Latinos and Hispanics.........is there a difference between the two and if so, please explain this to me and how does one distinguish between the two?

(I ask because I wouldn't want to offend anyone)

Lots of great answers.....Thanks to all....BUT
What I was really trying to ask is:
How would a person recognize the difference?
Do they speak differently?

Yes.
Latino is the name they came up with for themselves. But Hispanic is what the government came up with to call the Latino community. If a Latino person knew that, they'd be offended if you called them Hispanic but most don't really know...

Same thing
unless they are from Spain
in which case they are Spainards

Some of the info you are receiving is incorrect.
Latinoes being associated with LATIN America is a newer term.

The first Latinos were ancient Italians and Romans. The term Latino refered to Romans. It was later used to describe people of Spanish descent. Strangly enough, I never hear anyone refer to an Italian as a Latino anymore.

That's easy. Hispanics are a group derived from Spain or decendants from Spain. Latinos are a ultra generalization of people from latin american decent. Play it safe.

Hispanic = Spain

Latinos = Mexicans, Costa Ricans, Cubans, etc

And remember, each country is then sub divided into smaller segments like "Cubanos" or "Borricuas".

Tally ho!
