After a speech by President James Madison to Congress, on June 18, 1812, Congress voted to declare war. By that time, the United Kingdom had already revoked the restrictions on American commerce, but the news of this arrived in the United States only after war was declared.

Well the US was quite justified in declaring war,in 1812.The americans invaded canada, and burnt montreal. The british retaliated by marching to washington and burning down the whitehouse. There was no victor in this war.By the peace treaty they both got what they wanted. So technically both sides won.Certainly there was no loser.Of course there were casualties on both sides.
