With a tomato, you don't even need to cut them. If you bend one of the vines down to the dirt, and cover a portion with dirt, water well, it will take root pretty quick. If you want to transplant, just cut the branch with your spade and dig a big scoop of dirt and rooted vine and off you go.

There are different ways to clone different plants; cuttings - as you are doing - work well for some and less well for others. Vine plants like tomatoes are best rooted while still connected to the parent. Bury a branch and wait a week or so. Keep that area moist (not wet). Uncover and you are very likely to see roots developed from the branch. Once the roots are well developed, cut the branch off and move the clone to its new home. Other ways can and do work but this is really easy and works quite well.

Make a diagonal cut to remove a branch and include part of the main stem.

Dip the exposed cut in a rooting hormone such as Rootone.

Stick the cut end in loose soil and keep it moist.

Presto -- you have "cloned" your plant.

I agre with mslori___. When I plant my tomatoe plant I lay them on their sides in a trench and cober the main stem up tp where the leaves begin.. Roots will grow along the stem giving you a more hardy plant.

Dude use peat pellets and root starter on your cuttings and you'll have better success

keep it moist. The more leaves you pull off and deeper you are able to bury it the more roots you will have, possibly quicker
