You take the width of the parcel and multiply it by the length, then divide that by 43560.

for instance, a 100 x 100 divided by 43560 is .22 of an acre

There are 640 acres in a square mile. A square mile is 5280 feet by 5280 feet, or 27,878, 400 square feet. So an acre would be 27,878,400/640, or 43560 square feet. This would be roughly 210 feet by 210 feet.
