Sorry about your dad sweetie. Look, if your ex means anything to you at all, let him express himself. He might be self reflecting anyway. If he is more a casual friend, than make it known that you will be OK and no sympathy is needed. But wouldn't it be cold of him not to care about you at all? His feeling badly for you is more a feeling of caring for you. You need to establish what HE means to YOU.

The best thing to do is to have a private sit down conversation with him. Explain to him that you like him and that you appreciate that he is being nice but that you don't want him to feel sorry for you. Tell him what kind of relationship you DO want. Tell him straight but in a kind way. Ask him to go away and think about it for a day or two before he answers you.
This all takes some maturity and I don't know how old you are but it will work.
Also I hope you maintain a good relationship with your Dad. It is very important for you and for him.
