a sound bite is 37 seconds long, the commercial spot is only 30 seconds long. the entire sound bite must be included. By what percentage do you compress the sound to make it fit in exactly 30 seconds? There you go - applied algebra.

Calculating commercial breaks (second-increments) and the length of shows to equal 30 minutes, 1 hour, etc. And calculating the price/cost of advertising during popular shows (IE: Super Bowl Sunday). Calculating how long each newscaster needs to talk or run their video report to fill their part of the newscast and how they all add up to equal a full show. Calculating how far news reporters are from "breaking news" and who can arrive at which story faster, etc.

Well, they need to county how much time they have to have ads in their TV production, they need to count how much for each clip so that it is effective, and not too long or too short. They also need to know how count ratings of their production once it has been aired. Does this help?
