If they didn't hide certain things the media would take every little detail about something and blow it so far out of proportion that it becomes ridiculous, but the people believe it anyway. What the citizens do not know about things like intelligence and weaponry will not hurt them. I think our government informs us pretty well on current affairs. A hell of a lot better than other countries do that's for sure.

I can understand some things.
Such as...say weapons technologies. In war you need every advantage you can have.
So most things relating to both technology and war...I'm fine with not knowing the specifics.
however... hiding things like security tapes from the Oklahoma city bombing, all the "top secret" reports with the black censor marks all over them.
Security tapes from 9/11... I mean. These things it makes no sense to hide unless they fear that it will get them in trouble with us.
Uh oh....
And people wonder why conspiracies never die.

Same reason why people hide money from the government. If you want the truth, you have to put up some money and effort to get it.

first, why would they tell you everything they are doing when there are people who want to harm the country. they don't really want people to know they are going to bomb a place or else there will be nobody there to bomb. if the people knew everything that was going on there would be chaos everywhere. it's not smart for the government to let the people know everything that's happening.
