comes from the Sanskrit word for "LAND"

Afghanistan - Land of the Afghans
Hindustan - Land of the Hindus
Kazakhastan - Land of the Kazakhs and so on

I believe it means land. So it would translate as "land of the...."

"-stan" is arabic for "land." Living in Afghanistan means you live in "Land of the Afghanis."
