Brown recluse. In NYC (3 hospitals in 2 boros) we get at least 1 bite per week, and it goes up in spring and fall. We have about 1 admission per month, mostly from people who never came to the E.R. in the first place. Your best bet is to go to your closest hospital and ask one of the E.R. docs how many bites come in per month. If you are upstate, you may want to get in contact with the director of environmental biology at SUNY Coll. of Environmental Sci. and Forestry in Syracuse. He is the source our E.R. docs go to (my wife and her co-workers). The guy will tell you everything you want to know about them.

poisonous spiders in new york state are extremely rare. I have found reference to a few samples of black widows & brown recluses found in new york state but they are not common. we are clearly at the upper range of their habitat domain

As far as I know, none are. If you're afraid of that, I would suggest avoiding getting bitten by any kind of spider you see.
