If memory serves, TV Guide said (during Season 1) that the creators and writers had developed a story bible that would carry the show through 5 seasons. J.J. Abrams (executive producer)said, last May on Jimmy Kimmel, that they DO have a detailed plan for each year before they start filming anything, and that adaptations have to be made simply because of the nature of the TV business.

In any case, they only two people who MAY even know the answer to that question are J.J. and/or Damon Lindelof (creator), but I'm about one million percent positive that they would never, ever reveal it here or anywhere else. And as someone else said, no one answering on this board has any real idea.

I don't think there is a true meaning behind lost. I think they are making it up as they go.There are way to many confusing sub plots.I do watch, just hoping for some answers..........

Well I can recreate the writers conversation for you:
“Yeah, so we just talk crap and make it all mystical and conspirators theory and sting people along promising an answer for as long as we can and then by the time they realise there isn’t one we will have so much money we can retire”
“Pretty much”
