they could be very self absorbed to the point they feel they deserve what is given them, so don't show appreciation. or they don't like the person giving and really don't appreciate it because it is unwanted attention. usually anger and resentment makes that sort of behaviour..it's quiet hostility to withhold reward of recognition from someone who is nice to you.

Like an old friend of mine once pointed out, how can any person offer love, compassion, understanding or appreciate anything, if they have never been shown the same respect? (This friend of mine grew up in an impoverished "ghetto"). There are many families who treat their children as if they don't care whether they come home or not - usually the lower income and less educated. If you get someone with that background who still forges ahead, then you've met the exception to the rule.

Besides self-indulgent, spoiled brat.. Autism comes to mind. Autistic people have lack of emotion in most areas. Many diseases based on mental level and type can have the same effect. Good question but could take up 3 pages with examples. lol:-)

Misery. Abuse. Overindulgence. Spoiled rotten. Lots of pain, too much pleasure, not enough spirit. Well, okay, that's off the top of my head. If I were to try it in psychobabble, I would say that the person's Id and Ego parted ways and neither one refuses to admit they can't make it without the other.

In the long run... it could prove to be detrimental to health.
People who lack appreciation, tend to seek other ways/ outlet to vent out their frustration.
This frustration will then manifest itself in other areas such as greed, envy, selfishness, etc.
All of which could very well lead to self-destruction.
Could also prove to be harmful either to themselves or the person that is the "target" of their anger, due to not being able to own/ possess "it" (e.g. a person/ object/ material, etc that's contributing to their obsession)

Sometimes it can result from being extremely spoiled while growing up. But sometimes it has no cause other than that the person is a peckerhead.
