When my daughter was 13, one of the girls on her softball team was such a naturally beautiful girl that I mentioned it to my daughter. About 6 months later, while my daughter and I were at the mall, she pointed to this particular girl and asked, "Dad, do you know who that is?" Long story short, it was that girl and she had on so much make up that she looked like a circus clown.

WHY, Why, why did she feel the need to cover up all that natural beauty with make-up??? I notice that most mothers usually introduce their daughters to make up at some point in their lives...unless they pick it up earlier from their friends/peers. Is this some kind of "right of passage"? Does she have to have make up whether she needs it or not?

Im a typical teenage girl and its not that i dont like wearing make-up, i just dont see the need for it! Girls think it helps bring up their self esteam...you may have thought this girl was beautiful but she probably seen something else when she looked in the mirror! Its just sad that she thinks she needs make-up to see what you see...

No, you don't have to wear makeup. And, if you do, I think a natural look is best. It should enhance your natural beauty, not just cover you up with a mask.

However, I think a lot of mothers introduce their daughters to make-up because they've been asking them about it, not just as a right of passage.

NO WAY!! The only times I ever wear make-up is when I want to dress up for special occasions like my wedding or a formal social event. If I wore the same makeup everyday I wouldn't feel any different on these special occasions. I thank God everyday that I did not ruin my skin with make-up. I look much younger than many of my friends and people that are truly younger than I am.

I don't think so personally.
I wear very little make up. Mostly just mascara because I'm a blond and therefor I have blond eyelashes. If I don't wear mascara then it looks like I don't have any......lol

Other then that I don't usually wear any.

There are a lot of girls who have natural beauty and should not cover it up with a bunch of make up.
I have taught my oldest daughter that less is more where makeup is concerned.
Wearing very little make up just looks better then having your whole face painted like a clown.

Girls have been taught since the beginning of time that makeup makes you look older and more mature. This is why they wear so much of it. They are trying to impress the boys.
But I believe that mothers should teach their girls that it is just the opposite. To much make up makes you look hard, makes your skin look like leather and makes you look like a very immature little girl trying to play dress up.
Less is more. Keep your face looking soft and feminine.

I'm a guy and I think girl many times look better WITHOUT make up. Maybe a little here and there to make certain features show up but not much. I really prefer natural than artificial beauty.

No, you don't "have" to wear makeup. I was in college before I started wearing it. I went to a makeup party and realized by wearing some eyeliner and mascara I'd look better. My former sister in law was a real natural beauty and never needed or liked it. I personally look better with a bit on and we all have to try to look our best.

Girls DEFINITELY do not need to wear make-up. I've never put it on unless it's stage make-up for a performance i was doing.

i think girls put it on in excess because they want to look different and discover all the different ways they could distort their features. i also think society is pressuring girls to look a certain way and look at all the movie stars, they have a massive amount of make up on to cover an blemish or flaw on our face.

but i think the "flaws" make us beautiful and unique.

Teenage girls like to wear makeup to look older, more mature... and they are just discovering their feminine side... it's important to explain to your daughter that while it is okay to experiment with some makeup for fun, it is not the outside that counts. And too much makeup looks ugly anyway.

When girls get to their teenage years they get very self-conscious about their beauty and what other people think. They think about boys, and what other people think of them and that matters to them. Covering themselves with makeup is an easy way out for making girls feel better about themselves - sort of hypocritical for me to say, cause I wear makeup too. The phase will later on pass in life, like it did with mine! It's alright to worry but don't get crazy about it =)

When i was in middle school, early high school I wore tons of really bad makeup haha (because my peers wore lots). Don't worry it tones down. She's just experimenting and hasn't got it quite down yet. Now I write for a beauty magazine. So trust me it's just a phase.
