It's a Cajun thing. The name has it's roots in Acadian French/Cajun tongues.

Because his family is from Mississippi. They pronounced Favre with a southern accent and that became the way everyone else said it once Brett made the last name famous.

When you get three NFL MVP awards and 50,000 passing yards...you can questions his name alright? The man is simply amazing even if he spelled his name wrong when he was drafted and played it like he spelled it right to not look like an idiot...no that didn't actually happen but it would be freakin' hilarious...

It's just one of those quirky names. Kinda like Laveranues Coles from the Jets, whose name sounds like it should be spelled Laverneus.

Actually, in an interview, a couple years ago, he said that it's his last name, and he can pronounce it how he, and his family want to.

Strangely enough, I think because so many people struggle with or don't bother to say it as it's spelled that he just sort of went with LETTING them say it the wrong way.
Sort of like my first name is Frances. So many people can't keep straight that the -Es ending goes with "hErs" and the -Is ending of Francis is for "hIs" that I finally ended up just having people call me Fran. Hardly anyone misspells that!

I would guess because so many people say it that way, it was just easier to go with the flow than fight everyone on it. - but I'm just guessing - I've often wondered that myself.
