The people were mostly farmers. There was a significant amount of surplus for several centuries to be able to build cultural centers around Chaco Canyon. There was an astronomical observation and building on par with the Mayans. There was a certain degree of trade occurring with people further south. When prolonged weather changes impacted the area, the peoples moved to sites with permant water supplies in the Rio Grande Valley and the Hopi Mesas.
