I've had 2.
My honda 750 with a savior frame and 24" over springer front end was extremely reliable and despite it's hardtail frame, really very cofortable. I rode it for almost ten years and well over 150,000 miles. Other than scheduled maintainance, it was in the shop twice, once for a clutch kit replacement, and once for a bearing and seal on the drive sprocket.
The other was a yamaha xs650 special. While it was a nice ride, it proved not nearly as reliable as the honda. and spent at least 3 weeks of every season in the shop. It had a stock frame that the previous owner modified to accomodate 10" over forks. It sat pretty level, but the geometry was all wrong and the thing shook like hell between 20 and 50 MPH. I would not have bought it if I could have driven it first, but got it cheap because he could not keep it running.
My new project is a Kawasaki KZ1000 M2 that I will chop. I'll use the stock frame, and modify it myself so I'll know that my rake and trail are in synch and it rides smooth.

they've been around since the 60's. they started with honda 750's. only american motorcycles use sae(standard ie 5/8 3/4 1/2 etc) sizes. european and jananese use metric mm/cm as in metric bolts/nuts.
my experience 50 years riding is that ANY japanese motorcycle is far more reliabile than any european, which is far more reliabile than any american bike.

Not exactly sure what your looking for here... but at http://www.vtxoa.com/forums/index.php youll find plenty of folks that have 'chopped' VTX1800's and turned them into all sorts of different custom bikes.
