How Movements Change
Your son or daughter actually started to move in the womb at about week nine of development. You won't be able to feel these early movements, though, because the baby's bones are soft cartilage, and the baby is surrounded by lots of amniotic fluid. Those early movements appear to be reflexive. However, a month later, around week 13, fetuses in utero seem to be able to direct their actions. Sonograms have shown them sucking their thumbs and even playing with their umbilical cords.
Babies move a lot even when their moms don't notice - as much as 50 times an hour, or more than once every 2 minutes. It's just that the finer movements of hands, body and feet can't be felt from the outside.
You can expect that in time your baby's kicks and movements will get progressively stronger, and will soon get so sharp you won't be able to ignore them. After about week 22 or so you may feel your baby's first bout of hiccups, which makes your belly twitch. By the time you reach your last trimester, your whole belly will morph and take on strange dimensions while your little insider is rolling, turning from side to side, and kicking.
As your baby grows, he or she also becomes more sensitive. By week 23, all parts of your baby's body will respond to the slightest touch. Your baby will also become progressively more aware of changes in temperature and pressure and able to sense pain.
Was that a knee or a foot that just kicked?

Usually, babies start to kick around 3 - 5 months. It all depends on the baby. If it doesn't start kicking around 5 in a half months, you must see a doctor. The baby could have autism, brittle bones, etc.
