dampen the area down with warm water and sprinkle liberally with bicarbonate of soda...leave on the area until it is completely dry and vacuum off. Repeat if necessary

First off try not to do that!! Arm and Hammer carpet deodrizer! It works wonders. The longer you let it set the better the chance is of getting the smell out.

When I had a new carpet installed, the installers told me that a product called Anti-Icky Poo would remove the smell of feces,
urine, vomit. It is an enzyme that 'eats' the bacteria that is causing the smell. Here is a quote from a user that describes it best. It is not cheap, but worth it if it works. THE BEST PRODUCT ON THE MARKET FOR PERMANENTLY REMOVING URNE AND FECES ODOR NOT JUST COVERING UP THE SMELL WITH PERFUME. USED BY PROFESSIONAL CARPET CLEANERS FOR YEARS, I HAVE USED THIS PRODUCT SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE I HAVE AN AGING GREYHOUND WHO HAS HAD ALOT OF ACCIDENTS LATELY, I WOULD NOT EVER USE ANYTHING ELSE BECAUSE I HAVE HAD EXCELLENT RESULTS WITH THIS PRODUCT. ALSO WILL ELIMINATE ODOR FROM VOMIT, ROTTEN VEGETABLES, FISH, MILK, DEAD BODIES, SKUNK MUSK, AND EVEN SMOKE." The cheapest site to get this is E-Bay.

You'll never get rid of the smell, you'll only mask it with chemicals. Spills get into carpet and underpadding and cannot be eliminated. Get rid of any carpeting. It's not good for people anyway. Other than that, keep a pail handy for next time.

add 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide to 1 tablespoon of baking soda. add 1 teaspoon of dish soap and stir well. apply the solution to the area with a sponge. let it dry and vacuum. that's according to "haley's cleaning hints" book.
