The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Starting an Online Business For Dummies, 4th Edition by Greg Holden
* How to Start and Maintain A Successful Online Business by Kelly Thornton
* The Complete E-Commerce Book: Design, Build, and Maintain a Successful Web-Based Business by Janice Reynolds

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

most are just bull. Out of the hundreds I've researched I picked 2 the first one I picked was for training it's cheap and they do all the stuff you have listed. It's lampy1.jerkydirect.com It's a little corny but a lot of fun and jerky isn't the only thing they sell and for the 12 or 23 dollars a month you actually get good stuff. the other is www.igonet.biz/Gquest100 this one is pricey but a fantastic product that will save whoever subscribes to it thousands on their phone bill. I myself use it and it cut my phone bill by at least 2/3.I shuck you not. check em out.
p.s. I spent almost 2 years looking! I wiped 2 email accounts out with the spam generated when I logged on to every site that poped up

The key to a successful online business - is to know what you are doing. Sit back and think of what you know, what you like to do, and how you can do it. Once you come up with the idea, you should write out a business plan. It is sort of like a movie script, and you follow that to reach your goal. In my case, I became an Equipment Leasing Broker. Basically, I bring people together who want to buy equipment and those that want to lend money. I do it all from the safety and comfort of my home. Not to mention I am making a very good living doing it. I do it online and on the phone.. I hope this helps - Good Luck !

Hey sjappel01,

Alot of good questions, in fact all of those questions cant be answered in just one post. I will however try to clear up as much as I can.

First off, there are many different ways to work online. Some dont require you to have a website and sell things and others do.
Many affiliate programs and MLM companies dont require you to have a website, in fact they will give you an affiliate website for you to drive traffic to. Those companies will also take care of the order processing and shipping (if that applies) and simply mail you a check for the comission percentage of the sale.

Now if you have a product that you are looking to sell online, you can either sell it on ebay or from your own website. Ebay would definently be the cheaper route to go.

If you do decide to build your own website that takes orders you will first register a domain name (ie. sjappel01.com) and then you will find a web hosting company. Once you have a hosting company you will edit the name servers of your domain name to those of the hosting company and then that hosting service will host your website.

Once your website is up you will have to get into the cpanel and setup some sort of shopping cart system to handle the sales and order taking process.

The first way (using MLM or affiliate programs) is by far the cheaper and easier way to earn an income online.
--------------------------------

Now to address the copyright and pattent issue: You do not have to pattent or copyright anything. However, if you have invented a new product and are planning on selling it on the open market, it is highly recomended. Also if you have built your own website and have written your own content it is highly recomended that you copyright your work.

----------------------------

Now to address your question about search engine ranking and keyword optimization. This is NOT easy to do and I can not nor can anyone tell you how to get a top ranking in google or any other search engine without seing your webpage first. I can give you some tips to get ranked higher, but the entire process of ranking high in search engines can take years.
Tips:
1. choose your keywords that relate to your website/product
2. use the keywords in your title and meta tags
3. use the keywords in your body/content
4. provide alot of usefull keyword rich content
5. attain many back links to your website by writing articles and syndicating them, and engaging in link exchanges, posting your link to link directories and post in many forums with your website link in your signature.

As an alternative you can use google adwords which is a pay per click engine where you can bid on certain keywords and your website will show up on the right side of the page in google.

So, I hope I have addresses most of your questions, and please if you liked my answer a vote would be much appreciated.

I signed up for this. It is super cheap and easy and you can make $1000 checks!! Every time you get 20 new customers to try one of 5 different vitamins they will pay you $1000.

The way you do this is for a one time setup fee of $35 you get your own website that you don’t have to make, they make it for you. You don’t have to help or even speak to customers. The website will be under your name and that’s how we know that you get credit for a sale.

http://www.top5vitamins.com

It’s very simple; you will get paid $1000 every time you get 20 new clients to try one of the 5 amazing vitamins--- even if they return it. And even better, you can get other people signed up through your website as Independent advertisers and every time they get 20 new clients, you get paid $500. So you can make an army of people that got setup through you, making you $500 checks. And if you get 100 new clients in any month you’ll get your $5000 plus a $5000 bonus check!

And there is no time limit to get your 20 new clients, so you can take 6 months to get your 20 new clients and still get paid the same $1000, or if you were to get 60 new clients in a week, you would get paid $3000 that week! You can advertise on the internet, pass out pre-made flyers and business cards or by word of mouth. We will give you all the marketing tools and tips to drive thousands of people to your website. Check it out. Your website will look just like my site.

Only take advice from people who are already successful online and ignore the 'get rich quick' crowd trying to sell their bogus schemes.

I sell various ebooks online and make $50,000 p/a from the sale of one ebook alone. This is aside from my other web development and marketing business which employs people.

Well I think Adam B sums most of it up. What you need to keep in mind is that most opportunities out there are very, very similar. SO pick one that you enjoy doing, whose system works, and whose products you believe in.

Oh, and ofcourse, here's another choice.

Cheers and to your success!
