The Democratic Party is the U.S. political party of most liberals. The Republican Party is the U.S. political party of most conservatives. Usually, the Democratic Party is more willing to raise taxes in order to increase public spending on programs. The Republican Party will cut taxes and leave more money in people's hands, but this also decreases the amount of spending on government programs, including those that act as a safety net. In recent history, however, the Republicans have lowered taxes without cutting the budget to appease all people. This is putting the nation in debt and it should be stopped. In terms of "moral" issues, Republicans are against abortion, for the death penalty, and against gay marriage. Democrats take the opposite view. The political ideology bar, from left to right, goes Communists, Socialists, Liberals, Democrats, Moderates, Republicans, Conservatives, Libertarians, Fascists.

Democrats are bleeding heart liberals that purportedly care about the poor and the disenfranchised. Conservatives are rich folks that don't want to share their pie with anybody except their own cronies, and only then if they get a piece of the action. They tend to vote Republican. If they're really extreme about it, they are considered to be right wing, which will include your fundamentalist pulpit-pounders (who also tend to get rich). Left wing liberals will go and put railroad spikes into a tree to really screw up some lumberjack's chain saw. I'm not taking sides here. In our two-party political system, money is the grease that turns the wheels of government. Who ever is in power controls the money. It's enough to want to make you vote for Jesus. Unfortunately, he died horribly about 2000 years ago. I think it was the right wing conservative Romans, wanting to maintain the status quo, that nailed him. I somehow don't think a card-carrying Sierra Club democrat would have the stomach to do such a deed.

Democrats have a tendency to be liberal yet there is extensive spectrum of Democrats. bill Clinton worked o.k. with a Republican congress. He have been given alongside great with Allen Greenspan. very few conservatives are left interior the Republican social gathering. No genuine conservative might tolerate the great government, deficit and spend rules of the Bush administration. No genuine conservative might tolerate a indefinite $12 billion a month welfare application for Iraqis.

The 'Right' are people who think they are. The 'Left' are the ones that get left behind.
Liberals believe in a liberal application of education, which usually includes intellectual solutions to problems through government interaction. Conservatives usually believe in people solving problems themselves, with little government.
Unfortunately, some things get muddled all together now. For example, the Republicans now in power SAY they want less government, but they think they are so Righteous that any amount of government spending is ok as long as it is applied to making the world behave the way they want it to. Mixed into that is the influence of corporations, so the 'Right' is really a fake front (a facade) which is used to make people think they are working toward security and defense when they are really trying to control the world's economics (the money) by controlling the oil supplies and thus, the price of oil. By keeping the price of oil high, the corporations can suck money out of people faster than by having to convince them to actually make a buying choice through advertising.
The old ways of making decisions are now contaminated. If you want to decide if you like a candidate, ask yourself if you believe that any group should be more important than the rights of an individual. This is 'groupism', or 'corporatism'. IF you believe that the thinking individual is the prime source of any group's strength, this is what I call 'Localism'. Corporatism usually ends up turning into something called "Fascism", which is when the government and corporations blend into one superpatriotic entity that believes itself to be above any law that doesn't make it bigger. Oh yeah, Democrats and Republicans are now both Corporatists. They all believe the only way to get re-elected is to be friendly with the megacorporations that they own stock in. There is no spectrum from Democrat to Republicans. The true conservatives believe in doing things for themselves, the true Liberals believe in teaching people to do things for themselves. Neither are involved in politics anymore. What we have in politics is an Armed Madhouse Parliament of Corporate Whores. (tipping hat to Greg Palast and PJ O'Rourke)
