Depression is an emotional symptom of an underlying imbalance. Please try to figure out why you're depressed. In the meantime, I would suggest you try homeopathy. Soul Doctor on Answers can help you. You could also find a naturopath. If you don't know one, you can find a local one at www.trinityschool.org. They have graduates listed by state on their web site.

L-Tryptophan, the real stuff, not the 5-HTP, might work for you. Only a few manufacturers in the US make real L-Tryptophan. Overseas producers are not allowed to import the stuff into the US after the big 80's controversy regarding tainted L-Tryptophan.

L-Tryptophan was prescribed by many healthcare providers before Prozac was introduced in the 80's. Take at night as it may make you sleepy. L-Tryptophan produced by Lidtke is probably the purest available in the US, but you'll pay $$$$ for it. Don't be tempted to go with the 5-HTP version, it just doest work the same.

L Phenylalanine is also another possibility, but it is used more commonly for depression caused by chronic pain.

Either way, go with the most costly product you can afford. I recommend Lidtke for the Tryptophan and Thorne Research for the L Phenylalanine . Remember, the most expensive supplement is the one that doesn't do anything for you, usually the leastly costly one.

Well I was diagnosed with depression at 14 after a tramatic experience and have been on every medicine out there for it since and they all stop working at some point in time or the side effects were too bad so I started taking HHA Essiac 4-Herb Tea 3x's/day and Chromuim Herbal 5000 and I got off my meds that I had been having to take for 11 years and now I feel better than I ever have before.

Despite what the people who want to make money off you by selling you drugs say, all emotions are passing things. They come and go. It is hard to tell yourself this while you are in the mist of one.
The root cause is important, but not changing it, but accepting and acknowledging it in some way or another first and foremost and changing what you can in reason second, than back to step one.
Thinking that what you think is the only path to truth can make a person very depressed.
Learning and doing can help a lot.
Never underestimate the power of exercise. If you don't have time for exercise, than your life needs some real overhauling and would make anyone depressed.
Be around other people and learn to let them see your less than perfect sides. Be in quiet uplifting settings without distractions.(whatever that is to you). (I like my library, the ocean and old growth forest). Eating healthy and regularly is extremely important in times of stress.
Sometimes the difference between being real sad and depressed is a grey area. As much as it sucks, you just have to let time heal the wounds.

Some ideas from someone that has suffered with depression for many years. Whenever I eat a lot of chocolate, especially dark I get more depressed. When I take B- complex vitamins it helps & especially with extra Folic acid (another B vitamin).
I have taken all of the drugs for depression & nothing helped me but gave me terrible side effects.
Going walking helps me too.

In addition to working with a trusted therapist, eating well and sleeping properly, DHA/Omega3/fish oil is correlated with decreasing depression, sometimes significantly, and is quite easy to find. Carlsons and Nordic Naturals are high quality brands, which is important.
In severe depression, MAO inhibitors and other pharmaceuticals with similiar physiological action can help a lot of people, but please be aware of side effects and reas about the BEFORE taking them to decide what you want to do.
