they are unhappy so they get a kick from making others the same. and when in that frame of mind the last thing they are interested in is talking. just ignore them. they will get the message eventually.

There's a lot of reasons, but most of them center around this idea:
Some people feel powerless, so causing conflict makes them feel like they are making things happen. Making things happens makes them feel like they have power.
The best way to deal with people like that is to do one of two things, depending on your age and circumstance. 1) attack them directly without warning or mercy, 2) ignore what they are saying and talk about them like they aren't even there.
I've always gone with option 2, because option 1 makes people hate you forever, and they might just be having a bad day.

It's been my experience that people who do that kind of thing usually have no self esteem and try to make themselves look like bigshots by starting stuff. Ignore them long enough, and they'll eventually go away.

people are people and follow actions tauught by them, if they could care less then they are hoping you do too, the Dali Lama doesn't take it with him, like many other buddhists believe, perhaps this is where your problem is, you are taking it personally and carrying it around, learn to let it go and save your questions for ways to help others not to absorb on those that unfortunatley just don't care
