of their accent....I ask as I'm watching Stargate at the moment and remebered that Amanda Tapping is Canadian. So is Kristin Kreuk from Smallwille, Pamela Anderson, Evangeline Lilly [from Lost], Neve Campbell, Jim Carey, Mike Myers, Keifer Sutherland, Shannon Tweed... to name but a few...
But.. to me they all sound American. Can Americans detect a hint of a Canadian accent in the way in which they speak, or do they have to adapt their accents once they move to Holloywood?

If a person is just a regular Canadian who has just moved to Canada, I can almost always detect a Canadian accent or Canadian vocabulary. You pronounce words like "sorry" and "process" with a "long O" instead of a "short O." The rhythm, cadence, and pitch is different--this hard to explain. I can recognize it in a person like Tom Green. I cannot recognize it in Jim Carey. Except for Pam Anderson, Jim Carey, and Mike Myers, I didn't even know that the celebrities you've listed were Canadian.

Just so you know, I'm Canadian....
I have never once heard a Canadian say "Aboot" instead of about, that is an American delusion. There isn't really any difference between how Americans and Canadians speak, aside from a few instances ( old South, Quebecois, etc) and just so you know, for some of those actors you mentioned, it really isn't a matter of adjusting their speech to Hollywood, as Stargate and Smallville are filmed in Vancouver, Canada.

Like America it depends on where there from Canada. Some Canadians have an accent and some don't and usually when someone goes hollywood they either already lost there accent or they try to lose it.

I'm not too familiar with either of the accents but as a youngster in Scotland I used to be able to detect local dialects only a few miles away. I should think it's the same all over the planet

It just depends on the person I think..most of those people above sound American to me and I wouldn't have known they were Canadian otherwise. But, I have known some Canadians who don't sound American and have a Canadian accent.

Yes, many Canadians do have the American accent, with the exception of some of their words.

I have Canadian relatives and they do sound different than most Americans. It is a slight accent, but noticable. Ask some one to say "About" and if it comes out, "Aboot", they are Canadian.

I have Canadian relatives as well as relatives in Chicago and Milwaukee. I find many Canadian's accents are similar to mid-western accents.
